These docs are not up to date yet. The app is moving faster than we can describe it. These pages cover Watchpost 0.1.0 alpha (build 444) and may be incomplete or out of date. Details

Device users

Open Device Settings → Users to manage accounts stored by the camera or recorder. These credentials are separate from your Watchpost account, Hik-Connect sign-in and hub access.

Connection Apple apps Android
Xiongmai Users, groups, rights and password changes Dedicated Users form with the same main operations
Hikvision / HiWatch, including Hik-Connect Users, levels, local/remote rights and password changes Advanced editor; no equivalent user-management form
ONVIF Names and levels, read only Advanced editor; no equivalent user-management form

You need permission to manage device users. No Permission means the current device account cannot perform this task; connect with an authorized administrator account.

Add, Save, Change in the password sheet, and the confirmed Delete send commands immediately. They do not wait for the settings window’s Apply. Cancel a sheet before saving to abandon its draft. Discard or closing the settings window cannot undo a command already sent.

Watchpost attempts to keep a copy of the previously read user list before a command, then reads the list again. This is not a complete account backup or a way to recover passwords. A failure to keep that copy does not stop the command.

A command can reach the device even if its reply or the following reading fails. After an error, inspect the current list before repeating an operation. Hikvision level and rights changes can use separate requests: a changed level may remain even if the rights request fails.

  1. Choose Add User…. Enter an unused name without spaces, a password and its matching repetition.
  2. Select a group. For a new user, changing the group loads that group’s starting rights. Check the rights after choosing the group.
  3. Set the note and Allow several sign-ins at once if needed. This switch controls simultaneous device sign-ins.
  4. Choose general rights and per-channel Live and Archive access, then press Add.

The Groups list shows the groups and their number of rights. Watchpost does not offer a group editor here.

For an existing user, open its menu → Edit…. Its name stays fixed. Changing its group keeps the user’s current individual rights; review those separately. The Changes section summarizes the edits before Save.

Built-in accounts and the account marked This app have protection against deletion and rights changes. A reserved account’s group also stays fixed. Password changes remain available when the device permits them.

Choose Add User…, enter an unused name without spaces, select a level and repeat the password. The form requires at least 8 password characters; the device can reject a weak password under its own rules. It can also limit the number of accounts.

A new user starts with the device’s rights for that level. After adding it, use Edit… to inspect and adjust permissions. Remote rights apply to network clients such as Watchpost and the web interface; Local rights apply at the device’s own monitor. Channel permissions can include preview, playback, recording, backup and PTZ, according to the response. Granting a device right does not add a corresponding feature to Watchpost.

The editor shows the permissions the device supplies. Administrator rights are not individually adjustable here. Built-in accounts, administrator-level accounts and the account Watchpost uses have protection against deletion and rights reduction; their level stays fixed. If the permissions cannot be read, do not treat a level change as confirmation that all intended rights were saved.

Some devices require the signing-in account’s password to confirm user changes. If Watchpost has no saved device password, the form asks for Administrator password. That confirmation entry is not saved. A vendor-cloud sign-in password is a different credential.

Use the user’s menu → Change Password…, enter the new password twice and choose Change. Watchpost cannot show the current password. After a successful operation and user-list reread for its own device account, it updates the saved connection password and signs in again. Other apps and other saved connections need the new password separately.

If the operation reports an error after the device may have accepted the password, check the connection using the new credentials before retrying. Automatic password replacement depends on the operation completing successfully in Watchpost.

Delete… asks for confirmation. Deleting a device account prevents future sign-ins with it and leaves recordings in place. Removing a device from Watchpost’s registry is a different operation.

The Apple Users section displays the names and levels returned by the camera. Adding, editing or deleting accounts and changing passwords are unavailable in this form. Use the camera’s own administration tools for those operations.
