These docs are not up to date yet. The app is moving faster than we can describe it. These pages cover Watchpost 0.1.0 alpha (build 444) and may be incomplete or out of date. Details

Site connection paths

A site can have several paths to its devices. Keep each device’s address as it is on the site’s own network. The site’s routes describe how Watchpost reaches that address from elsewhere.

On Mac, open the site’s menu in Devices and choose Site Connection…. On iPhone and iPad, use the site menu or Site Connection… in Storage and Exchange. Editing requires unlocked storage.

In Connect, choose Automatically, Directly, or one saved route. With no routes, the site uses direct access.

Automatically prefers a direct connection when the check succeeds; otherwise it chooses the first reachable route in the saved list. This is the list order, not a comparison of connection speeds. If no path answers, the app can keep its previous path while waiting for another check.

A fixed choice stays selected even if that path fails. It does not automatically fall back to a working route. Return to Automatically to allow path selection again. Saving a changed path can restart device connections and interrupt video.

Open Add Path:

  • Set Up on a Hub… on Apple platforms creates the router configuration and saves the resulting route. Save pending route edits before opening it. See Connect a site.
  • Hub Route by Hand… is for an already configured hub and router. Choose the hub, enter the route’s Access token and the Devices network as seen through that route, such as 10.77.1.0/24.
  • VPN Network… describes a network your own VPN already makes reachable. Enter its address and prefix, such as 10.8.1.0/24. This does not create or start a system VPN.

For a manual route, use the network assigned by the existing setup. The form shows how a sample device address will look through it. A warning about another site’s overlapping network means devices could share addresses; review the configuration before saving. The warning itself does not block Save.

A hub’s admin token manages the hub. The access token in this form opens the route to devices. They serve different purposes. If a token is already saved, leaving its field empty keeps it; enter a new token to replace it. See Manage hubs for the hub’s address and certificate settings.

Check Now probes the paths using one device of the site. Add a device first if the button is unavailable. The Apple form prefers a device in Live, then the first device; its choice can include equipment. Automatic background path selection uses a camera or recorder added by address instead. A failed probe to an equipment port may say little about access to cameras.

The check tests TCP access directly or through the relay, including the relay’s token and port permissions. It does not sign in to the camera or prove that every device or stream works. Reachable, In use and Not checked describe different things: the last answer, the saved path in use and the absence of a result.

Read the specific refusal. A bad token, a forbidden address or port, busy connections, an unreachable device and a certificate error need different corrections. A successful check of an edited form does not save or activate its draft routes. On Apple platforms, after editing fields, run the check again rather than relying on a result from before the edit.

Use Save to apply the route list, path choice and newly entered tokens. Closing without saving discards these form edits. A hub saved in a separate form and a route saved by the router setup have their own saving actions; closing Site Connection does not undo them.

Choose Remove Route or Remove VPN Network in the row menu, then save. If you remove the fixed route, the form returns to automatic selection. Saving deletes that route’s local access token and tunnel key. It leaves the site and devices in the registry and does not remove anything on the hub. The remaining paths determine whether the devices stay reachable.

A route received from another person keeps its hub and network fields locked. You can replace its access token or remove your local route. It does not give you the owner’s router key or hub administration rights. An Access ended notice concerns shared hub access; ask the sender for renewed access. See People and invitations.

Open the site’s connection settings from Devices. Android has automatic/fixed selection, manual hub routes, VPN networks, checks and Save. It does not offer the Apple router setup wizard here. Configure the router elsewhere before entering a manual route. Closing the screen without Save discards its route edits; separately saved hub changes remain.

Center-managed shared access currently needs Mac to obtain and renew its route tokens. Importing such a package on mobile does not enable the same path; see People and invitations.
