Detection and video analytics

Open Device Settings and choose the detector in Events. These forms are available in the Apple apps for supported Xiongmai and Hikvision devices. ONVIF has no detector form in Watchpost; Android uses the advanced editor for supported blocks.

Detection runs on the device. Watchpost does not analyze the picture itself. A detector, an event recording and a notification in the app each need their own settings.

  1. Open Motion Detection and select the camera channel.
  2. Turn on Detect motion and adjust sensitivity. Xiongmai offers levels 1–6; Hikvision uses the choices or range reported by the device, with a fallback range when it supplies none.
  3. In Zones, drag across the picture to select the cells to watch. Starting in a selected cell erases cells during that drag; starting in an empty cell adds them. Select All watches the whole grid; Clear removes the selection.
  4. Set the event hours and actions below. On Hikvision, enable Report to Events if you want the event in Watchpost.
  5. Choose Apply… → Write, then test movement inside and outside the zone.

The grid appears only when Watchpost can read the zone format. Its size depends on the device. The live picture helps position cells; editing the grid prepares a draft. A picture with highlighted cells does not prove that the device has accepted the new zone.

Hikvision can also offer a switch to highlight motion in its video. This controls the device’s video overlay.

Human Detection can offer a choice between people and any moving objects, its own sensitivity and a switch to frame detected people in the video. The camera combines this with motion detection: motion reports depend on the selected object type. Set the hours and actions in Motion Detection.

Human-detection lines and areas that some cameras keep in additional rule fields have no dedicated editor here. Do not assume that this form provides every smart-detection option in the manufacturer’s interface.

In Intelligent Analysis, select the channel and the algorithm the device supports. Changing the algorithm can change which rule settings the device uses.

Algorithm What to configure
Perimeter and tripwires Enable line crossing or a protected area; select the line, its use switch and direction options, with people/vehicle filters where offered
Left and removed objects Choose Left, Removed or Parking and enable that rule; the form edits its first area when present
Video diagnostics Enable supported checks for blur, a frozen picture, scene changes or other picture faults; adjust sensitivity where offered

Drag across the picture to draw a line; drag an endpoint to move it. Drawing a complete line enables that line, while clearing it turns off its use switch. For an area, click or tap to add 3–8 corners, then drag corners to refine the boundary. Remove the last corner or clear the shape to start again.

The device determines the number of available lines. If line and area detection are both on, choose which shape to edit; the other shapes remain dashed. Check the rule’s enable switches as well as its geometry. Unknown algorithms belong in the advanced editor.

Camera Tampering reacts to a covered, blinded or uniform picture. Xiongmai and Hikvision offer the detector and sensitivity when supported, plus the available actions and hours.

Video Loss reacts when a channel stops receiving video. Xiongmai can expose its enable switch, schedule and actions. The Hikvision form provides the channel’s reactions; it has no separate video-loss detector or schedule control here.

The schedule uses the device’s time. Highlight the hours in which the device should react. The editor works in 30-minute cells and refuses a stroke that would exceed the number of periods a day can hold. Untouched days retain their original exact times; editing or copying a day can replace its finer boundaries with half-hour intervals.

Hikvision may return no hours for an event. Watchpost shows a note about this: an empty reading is not proof the event is disabled. Once you write hours, the device reacts within those hours. Check the result on the device before relying on an empty schedule to suppress events.

Xiongmai’s actions can record selected channels, take device snapshots or activate outputs; the available fields depend on the device. Hikvision’s Reactions can report events, record the channel or send mail and FTP notifications. See Alarms and event actions.

Event recording also needs a suitable recording mode and schedule. Mail and FTP need working service settings.

Xiongmai’s Copy to Other Channels… stages the selected event settings for the target channels. Motion zones remain those of each target camera. Analysis copying preserves target lines and areas, including their associated rule data; inspect each target’s geometry and switches afterwards. Copying still needs Apply and Write.

Watchpost saves the previously read block before a write and attempts to read it afterwards. Hikvision detection, reactions and hours are separate blocks: some can succeed while another fails. Discard clears pending edits; it does not undo successful writes. See Advanced editor and backups.

Finally, trigger a controlled event and check the expected reaction and a new recording. For app reception and foreground limits, see Events. Hik-Connect settings do not give Watchpost a cloud event feed.
